The whole US liquid system doubles at every step, which is why American recipes scale so easily — and why the imperial quart, which does not line up with a metric cup, is such a nuisance.

The imperial quart is 1,136 ml against the US quart's 946 ml — 20% larger, because the imperial gallon was defined from a different base. Old British and Canadian recipes may mean either.
