The story

KitchenConvert started with a simple frustration: every recipe online is written for someone else's kitchen. French braises measured in grams and millilitres sit next to American baking recipes measured in cups, Japanese recipes using 200ml cups (not the 240ml American ones), and family recipes scrawled with no measurements at all. The promise of the internet — every recipe in the world, at your fingertips — has been real for two decades. But the friction of actually using those recipes has stayed roughly where it was in the 1980s.

KitchenConvert exists to remove that friction. Paste a URL, snap a photo, type from memory, or speak into your phone. The recipe arrives in your kitchen with correct measurements for your country, scaled to the number of people you are feeding, with a shopping list grouped by aisle and substitutions for anything you do not have.

This is a tool for home cooks, not for restaurants or content creators. The features reflect that. Pantry tracker because most home cooks forget what is in the back of the fridge. Meal planner because Tuesday's “what's for dinner” question is the single most stressful decision of the week. AI substitutions because the supermarket was out of buttermilk and the recipe does not tell you what to do. Recipe translation because your grandmother's handwritten note is in Cantonese and Google Translate butchers cooking technique. None of these features are flashy on their own. Together they remove the small frictions that make cooking feel harder than it should.

Paul founded KitchenConvert after one too many evenings deciphering recipes written for someone else's kitchen. Most cooking apps optimise for content engagement or visual polish; almost none focus on the unglamorous mechanical work of making a recipe usable in your specific units, with the ingredients you can actually buy locally. KitchenConvert does that one job, and tries to do it well.

How it works

KitchenConvert uses two complementary AI providers, each for what it does best. The split is not a marketing checklist — different models genuinely excel at different tasks, and using the wrong one for the wrong job produces worse output at higher cost. Reads recipe photos, scans cookbook pages, translates foreign-language recipes with culinary nuance.

Analyses nutrition, suggests substitutions, detects equipment, and powers the AI Chef chat.
